Celebrated Nelson musician Richard Nunns has been awarded a top New Zealand literary prize for the story of his journey to revive traditional Maori musical instruments.

Nunns was awarded the Judith Binney Best First Book Award for Illustrated Non-Fiction for Te Ara Puoro: A Journey into the World of Maori Music, at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards on 10 May.

Published by Potton and Burton, Te Ara Puoro charts Nunn's 40-year journey from curious Pakeha schoolteacher to living authority on traditional Maori instruments.

The judges said Te Ara Puoro is as precious as the taonga it represents.
