New Zealand Author Makes Man Booker Prize Longlist
Friday 7 August 2015
Wellington writer Anna Smaill has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2015. Her book, The Chimes, is set in a world where music has replaced the written word and memories are carried as physical objects.
As the only New Zealander on the longlist, Smaill follows in the footsteps of New Zealand author Eleanor Catton who won the Man Booker Prize in 2013 with her book The Luminaries. "I just didn't expect to be on the list, I really didn't ... it's thrilling. I'm so wonderfully happy," Smaill said.
The winner of the Man Booker Prize, considered “the ultimate prize to win in the English speaking world”, receives NZ$117 000.
The shortlist of six books will be announced on 15 September.
