New Book on Nelson/Tasman Women in Local Government

Friday 30 November 2018

2018 marks the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. As part of these commemorations a booklet has been published that celebrates the positive contributions women have made and continue to make to local government in the Nelson/Tasman region.

Women Decision-Makers Nelson and Tasman 1944-2018 was created by Gail Collingwood, Elaine Henry, Hilary Mitchell and Dr. Shelley Richardson. It documents the experiences of the 52 women elected to local government in the Nelson/Tasman region since 1944, the year that the first woman, Laura Ingram, was elected to council in our region.

Mostly told in their own voices, the booklet succinctly recollects the trials and achievements of our former and current women councillors. The women discuss why they entered local body politics, their experiences, and what they gained from it.

The creation of this booklet was an ambitious project, and it makes an invaluable contribution to our regional history.

Copies of the booklet are available for a koha (donation) at your local library.
