The American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has won the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Nobel Academy, said "Bob Dylan writes poetry for the ear. But it's perfectly fine to read his works as poetry."

Named by Rolling Stone magazine as "the most influential American musician rock and roll has ever produced", Dylan's writing has explored and developed the tradition of American songwriting.
