Resolutions!
Thursday 1 January 1970
4,000 years ago the Babylonians started the tradition of new year resolutions with promises to their gods for a good new year ahead! The Romans continued the tradition moving it to January in honour of Janus, the god of new beginnings, when they made their resolutions most with a moral flavour - to be good to others!
Current New Year’s resolutions can cover a realm of things
- Getting fit
- Eating healthily
- Stopping smoking
- Being less stressed
- Learning something new
Last year Mark Zuckerberg’s resolution was to read a new book every other week with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies!
Writer Ann Morgan’s resolution was to attempt to read a book from every country in the world!
So why not resolve to read more in 2016?
Maybe you want to read a certain number of books?
Or perhaps you want to try a new genre?
Is there a specific title you’ve always meant to read?
Whether your resolution is based around reading or getting healthier, eating better or learning something new – we have lots of resources here to help.
