Notre-Dame de Paris - Our Lady of Paris

Thursday 18 April 2019

Just before 7.00pm on 15 April 2019, Paris' magnificent old cathedral caught fire while undergoing renovation. After burning for nearly 15 hours, there is significant damage to the cathedral including the destruction of the spire. The majority of the 13th century oak roof, called "the forest" because it required a forest of trees to build it, was also destroyed. According to Bertrand de Feydeau, vice president of the French Heritage Foundation, the latticework will also be difficult to replace given that there are no trees in the country large enough to replace the ancient beechwood beams consumed by the fire. Fortunately, the fire left the three great rose windows and other medieval glass largely intact.

The people of Paris raised their voices in song to express their love and hope for this iconic cathedral so close to their hearts and their French identity.

President Macron has vowed that Notre-Dame de Paris will be rebuilt.
