Nearly 40 years after it was first made into an animated film, the much-loved children's novel Watership Down is set to reach our screens again.

BBC and Netflix have produced a new animated mini-series which will screen worldwide later this year.

Written by Richard Adams, Watership Down was first published in 1972. After being rejected by six publishing companies it became one of the best selling children's books ever.

Set in idyllic southern English countryside, it follows the trials of a band of rabbits, who have human characteristics and some mystical powers, as they try to escape the destruction of their warren and begin the perilous search for a new home.

The book won both the Carnegie medal and the Guardian prize for children's literature. In 1978 it was made into an animated film.

The theme song Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel topped the UK charts for six weeks.

Adams died at his home in Hampshire on Christmas Eve 2016 aged 96.
